all about a better start for britain's babies

At Best Beginnings, our vision is of a future where all children enjoy excellent care from the very beginning, where families have the information and support needed to protect their children's health, and illnesses and deaths can be avoided.  The work of Best Beginnings is unique in the UK, exploiting as it does the window of opportunity between birth and two years of age, where foundations for a healthy childhood can be laid. Find out how you can help us give all britain's babies an equal chance of a best beginning...

See what the media's been saying so far...

The health benefits of breastfeeding to mother and child are huge. A breastfed baby is 5 times less likely to end up in hospital with gastroenteritis than a formula fed baby. The main reason that women stop breastfeeding early is because they lack information and support. That's also why younger mothers from poorer backgrounds are less than half as likely to start breastfeeding than older mothers. Production is now complete on our groundbreaking breastfeeding DVD titled "From Bump to Breastfeeding: following real mothers' stories to find out how", which is already going out free to pregnant women in the UK. The films are being made in collaboration with the Department of Health (DoH) and many key professional and charitable organisations including UNICEF.

Bestival 2008

bestival 2008The 5th-7th September 2008 and amid the rolling hills of the scenic Isle of Wight a festival was unfolding...not just any festival, but the acclaimed, sold-out Bestival. And Best Beginnings was there thanks to the generous support of Bestival hosts Josie and Rob da Bank, who provided us with our very own marquee and volunteer passes. Needless to say the BB team was very excited by the preparations for our first ever festival! The weather reports painted an ominous picture, and to the flip flops, suncream and vests in the rucksack were added wellies, ponchos, emergency fold out canoes... But despite the 'weather bomb' drenching the site with torrential rain, spirits weren't dampened, just a little muddy.
